Description

The project was awarded back in June 2015 and the initial stage was to undertake a detailed survey and commence manufacture of the precast components.

The reduce on-site re-construction time, the works were designed with precast pile caps, beams and deck planks with an in-situ overlay deck. As the existing piles were to be reused it was critical to get the existing position exact so that the new beams could be made ahead of time. DCS engaged a 3D laser specialist to scan the entire works area to create a 3D model that was provided to the precast company.

The project involved the construction of:-
  • 3D laser scan and precast concrete construction
  • Erection of large hoarding with mural to minimise impact to the public
  • Traffic and pedestrian management
  • Design of temporary works to enable existing deck to be saw-cut and lifted out leaving the beams in place
  • Removal of the old “Historic Cruise Terminal”
  • Removal of the beams using an excavator with pulveriser located on a barge
  • Diamond wire-sawing of the existing piles to a new level (deck sloped in both planes, so every pile cap was cut to a different level)
  • Installation of new precast pile caps and pressure grouting
  • Installation of precast beams and in-situ stitch joints
  • Installation of precast deck planks and grouting
  • Pouring of in-situ deck and kerb
  • Re-installation of all street furniture and line marking
Special features of project:
  • Over 40 different pile caps, 30 different beams and more than 40 different deck planks were manufactured to suit the pile spacing and types (not all the piles were the same as the section of wharf being replaced was built over 3 different stages with 3 different methods).
  • The project was completed in a high profile pedestrian traffic environment with minimal effect on the travelling public.
