Description

The project involved the construction of two new roundabouts on the Huon Highway, Goshawk Way was extended to join the Huon Highway with a roundabout and John Street/Huon Highway existing roundabout was upgraded. The project forms the new gateway into the Kingston CBD.

The project involved the construction of:-
  • Of new roadway for Goshawk Way and a roundabout connection to Huon Highway.
  • Of a new roundabout connection for John Street and the Huon Highway.
  • Reconstruction of the Huon Highway.
  • Installation new pedestrian underpass.
  • Installation of new services including stormwater, sewer, electrical and communications.
  • Construction of new street lighting.
  • Construction of shared paths including connection to Kingston Park and Kingston wetlands.
  • Landscaping and irrigation works.
  • Installation of traffic facilities including traffic barriers, signage and linemarking.
Special features of project:
  • This project featured complex traffic management arrangements in an urban environment requiring engagement with the Department of State Growth and multiple other stakeholders.
  • Assisting Kingborough Council with finalisation of scope integrating design changes that provided cost savings to allow the project to be financially feasible.
    • Rationalisation of stormwater design to eliminate deep stormwater.
    • Use of Mass Bloc retaining walls for pedestrian underpass headwalls.
    • Design change to provide an additional inbound lane to Kingston increasing the capacity of the works and also improving the traffic management arrangements by eliminating the need for long periods of shuttle flow arrangements.
  • Engagement with service authorities to facilitate the relocation of services
  • Identification of the need for and the provision of conduits for future works by the Department of State Growth for the Online Traffic Information System (OTIS) for the Greater Hobart Area. This work will prevent the new works having trenches excavated through recently completed works.
  • Reuse of existing asphalt pavement by reclaiming using milling machine to mix with existing underlying granular pavement.
