Description

This project was part of the Australian and Tasmanian Governments commitment to strengthening and replacing Tasmanian bridges on key routes to retain the existing levels of service for heavy vehicle freight and community access. For these sites, the new bridges were built in the same location as the existing bridge. For both projects, the works involved temporary realignment and full reconstruction of the Doctors Creek Bridge and Wacketts Creek Bridge and associated approaches.

The project involved the construction of:-
  • Demolition and disposal of existing bridges
  • Temporary bypass construction and removal
  • Clearing and grubbing
  • Excavation in all materials
  • Placement of fill for raising the existing road level and for the bypass track
  • Alteration to drainage which may include grading of the existing surface to allow flow at the inlet and outlet
  • Installation/provision of sandbags and/or any other means to temporarily divert water during construction
  • Supply, installation and/or construction of driven piles, abutments, wingwalls, precast concrete deck units, topping slab, kerbs, steel post and rail traffic barriers, approach slabs and scour protection.
  • Pavement construction
  • Installation of sub-soil drains
  • Application of primer seal and dense graded asphalt
  • Installation of new road markings and guide posts
  • Installation of new traffic barriers on approaches
  • Removal of temporary bypass upon completion
  • Reinstatement of accesses, vegetation and fencing as required; and
  • Sundry minor works.
Special features of project:
  • The project delivery method on this project was unique as Jason Lennard (DCS) was appointed Project Manager for BridgePro and had overall responsibility for the construction of the works. DCS Civil Tas Pty Ltd provided a majority of the management and resources to complete the project. BridgePro provided management systems, precast concrete components and piling expertise.
  • Doctors Creek Bridge was a single 23.6m span bridge with one bored pier abutment and one founded on rock. The superstructure was a Super Tee deck with precast parapets and insitu concrete deck, end posts and run on slabs. The works required the construction of a single lane bypass with a Bailey Bridge. The works also involve road approach reconstruction and associated traffic barriers and ancillary works.
  • Wacketts Creek Bridge was a single span bridge, 15.2m with driven pile and insitu abutments. The superstructure was a prestressed concrete beam deck with insitu concrete deck overlay and kerbs and run on slabs. The works required the construction of a two-lane bypass with a multi pipe culvert. The works also involve road approach reconstruction and associated traffic barriers and ancillary works. This project was delayed due to inadequate pile design issues and was resolved with a collaborative effort between the Contractor, Principal and Superintendent.
