Description

The Tasmanian Governments commitment to housing led to the Huntingfield land release project to supply additional housing to the Kingsborough area. To facilitate this, a new Huntingfield connector roundabout was required to create a connection to this precinct. During the DA process, the project was amended significantly to include a slip lane to facilitate congestion to the Channel Highway and improve safety to roundabout users.

The project involved the construction of:-
  • Designing and redesigning a temporary bypass to facilitate traffic throughout the site.
  • Constructing 600m of new road to cater for a road realignment
  • Blasting of 36000m3 of Basalt rock adjacent to the highways
  • Staging of works to facilitate traffic through the site
  • Excavation and embankment construction
  • All stormwater and subsurface drainage
  • Service relocation works including HV power, Street lighting, Watermain and Telstra
  • Supply and placement of subbase and base materials • Kerbing and various concrete footpath construction
  • Landscaping and vegetation works
  • All bitumen sealing and asphalt placement
  • All road safety barrier construction
  • Installation of traffic facilities including signage and line marking
Special features of project:
  • Crushing of blasted rock: Due to the subsequent changes to the design, the project generated a significant volume of excess material which was required to be disposed offsite. DCS proposed and liaised with the adjacent subdivision works to transport the better-quality excavated rock to the subdivision and the process the rock by a multi stage crushing process to produce a subbase granular pavement for use in the subdivision as a lower level pavement layer. An estimated 10,000m3 of rock was reutilised as a pavement in lieu of disposal offsite. A fantastic result for both the Department of State Growth and Homes Tasmania
  • Redesign of temporary bypass: Prior to award of the contract, DCS developed a temporary bypass design which ultimately supported a winning tender result. Due to the design change after award of the contract, a new temporary bypass design was required. The new temporary design needed to support a constructible staging process whilst ensuring continuous traffic flow for the travelling public especially during heavy peak traffic flows. The new bypass design utilised the slip lane corridor however was significantly elevated to ensure traffic was separated from the heavy plant operation of the works
  • Blasting works adjacent to Channel Highway: DCS engaged Forze Explosives to design and stage the blasting operation to facilitate the multistage excavation operation. Due to the nature of the works, close proximity to the highway, residents and existing services, careful planning and preparation was required to close the highway to facilitate the blasting operation. The stakeholder engagement team communicated thoroughly with all stakeholders affected to ensure all parties were appropriately aware of road closures of up to 10 minutes
