Description

The Poatina Main Road and Lakes Secondary Road were among many locations across Tasmania that were severely affected by a weather event in September 2022. Poatina Main Road had to be closed immediately due to the scale and extent of the damage. DCS Civil Tas Pty Ltd was approached by State Growth to seek assistance in undertaking flood repairs. DCS was engaged under a dayworks arrangement to complete the works. The project necessitated close coordination with the designer Pitt and Sherry to scope and find design solutions at each location.

The project involved the construction of:-
  • Vegetation removal requiring arborist advice about the stability and survival of significant trees that had been undermined due to batter erosion and slips.
  • Removal of significant debris deposits in drains and across roads.
  • Road reconstruction at a location of catastrophic loss of road and the culvert.
  • Stabilisation of slips including removal of slip material and batter adjustments to prevent future slips.
  • Debris removal from existing blocked culverts and replacement of damaged culvert structures.
  • Installation of concrete barriers to prevent future slip material spilling onto the road.
  • Gabion mattress installation for erosion protection.
  • Reynolds Corner on the Lakes Secondary Road was also severely damaged with deep roadside erosion. This scope was added to the project during the course of the works. It required road reconstruction and culvert remediation.
Special features of project:
  • Location; The project sites were located World Heritage areas. Close coordination with Hydro Tasmania and State Growth to find locations for disposal of vegetation and slip debris. Locations where previous Hydro Tasmania disturbance were present were identified as disposal areas. The disposed material was used to assist in the rehabilitation of the location.

  • Design Coordination; DCS Civil and Pitt and Sherry worked closely together to finalise the scope of works at each of the locations. The amount of damage incurred at each location varied. There were stretches of road where vegetation and eroded material had been deposited requiring removal to disposal. There were locations where slip material extended upslope and benching was required for machinery gain access to remove this material. Coordination with arborists was required to identify trees for removal that had been compromised due to the actions of erosion and landslips.
