Details

Description

The project involved laying 2 x 72m, 1200 diameter PE pipes from an existing concrete pit of the foreshore of Bellerive Beach, underground across the beach foreshore and along the river bed into the Derwent River, as well as livening the system. This allows the stormwater to flow into the river without affecting the aesthetic of the waterfront.

The Works included but were not limited to the construction of the following key elements:
  • Establishment of a secure worksite, preventing access primarily in the tidal zone
  • Collection of supplied pipes and delivery of new pipes
  • Fusion butt welds for all joins in the twin pipelines
  • Construction of rock groyne to provide support to channel excavated through beach and access to furthest extent of the pipe outfall.
  • Threading of the anchor bags and metal restraints onto the pipelines prior to installation
  • Excavation of the sand to the required level and laying of the pipelines along the bed of the river, as well as connection to stormwater pit
  • Filling of the anchor bags which was done insitu, while the pipes were submerged and resting on the bottom of the river bed
  • Installation of a supplied navigation marker at the end of the pipelines
  • Livening of the stormwater system
  • Removal of rock groyne, debris and tidying of the dune to its original shape
Special features of project:
  • Design and installation of an efficient stormwater system
  • Adapting to the continuously changing conditions of the river beach site
  • Creation of numerous specialised pieces of equipment such as excavator attachments with the ability to sink the pipes during the pouring of the anchor block bags, as well as frame used to support the anchor bags during the filling process
  • Coordination to relocate pipe from dog park to the work site.
